Create New MacBook Pro From Scratch In Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to create realistic new MacBook Pro from scratch in photoshop, combinig shapes and different blending options.

It’s going to be a long tutorial, so make yourself nice, warm, beautiful cup of nescaffe… And we are ready to start!

Let’s take a look at our final image.

STEP 1: Creating the front of the MacBook Pro

Let’s start by creating new document in photoshop. I’m using 1000×730px. Fill the background with #ffffff. Name this file macbook.psd.

I’m going to use guide lines in this tutorial, so let’s place all the lines that we’re going to need. Vertical guidlines: 80px, 107px, 177px, 825px, 895px and 922px. Horizotal guidlines: 104px, 522px, 530px, 545px, 553px and 564px.

Pick the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), set radius to 8px and draw a fairly long rectangle like on the picture below:

Now rasterize this layer. With Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection and cut off the top of the rectangle with a selection shown on the picture below:

Delete selected part of rectangle by pressing Delete key on the keyboard.

Apply following layer styles:

For gradient choose following colors:

• - color: #96979b; location: 0%
• - color: #ffffff; location: 1%
• - color: #c2c3c7; location: 5%
• - color: #dadbdd; location: 50%
• - color: #c2c3c7; location: 95%
• - color: #ffffff; location: 99%
• - color: #96979b; location: 100%

Name this layer “front” and move up a bit. Now we have this:

Let’s continue adding details. To create latch, pick up Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), set radius to 5px and drow small rectangle like on the picture below,place it in the middle of “front”, rasterize it and name this layaer “latch”.

Mark the top of “latch” with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and delete it. Apply following layer styles to “latch” layer:

For gradient choose following colors:

• - color: #96979b; location: 0%
• - color: #ffffff; location: 1%
• - color: #c2c3c7; location: 2%
• - color: #dadbdd; location: 50%
• - color: #c2c3c7; location: 98%
• - color: #ffffff; location: 99%
• - color: #96979b; location: 100%

Next, create sensor by drawing thin black rectangle with Rounded Rectangular Tool (U), radius set to 5px, name this layer “sensor” and apply layer styles:

We’re going to crete the bottom new. Once again with Rounded Rectangular Tool (U), radius set to 20px, draw rectangle like shown on the picture. Name this layer “below front”.

Now choose Direct Selection Tool

click on “below front” layer and start moving Anchor Points until you got something like this.

Do it on both sides, left and right. Rasterize this layer, make selection with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to cut out the top part of “below front” layer.

Move this layer below “front” layer.

Apply layer styles to “below front”.

This is what we have now.

It’s time to finish front of MacBook Pro. Set the foreground color to #323337, pickup Ellipse Tool, and draw 4 small, tiny circles. Hold Shift + Alt to draw a circle. Place this circles like on the picture below.

Select all this layers: “front”, “latch”, “sensor”, “below front”, “holes”; press Command + G to gruop this layers and give this group name “bottom”. Layers are shown on picture below.

STEP 2: Creating Display

Hide “bottom” group and start creating Display.
First pick up Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), set radius to 20px, and draw big ractangle. Name this layer “screen backgound”. Move it below “bottom group”.

Apply next layer style:

Now pick up Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) with radius set to 20px, draw another rectangle, a little bit smaller then previous, like on the picture below. Name this layer “behind screen”.

Duplicate this layer, press Command + T to start resizing, and move bottom part up a bit (around 14px). I will hide “behind display” layer so You can see what we have now. Name this layer “screen”

Apply next layer styles to “screen” layer:

Unhide “behind screen” and see the result.

Let’s create reflection over the screen. Hold Command (Ctrl on PC) key and click on “screen” layer thumbnail. We have now selection around “screen” layer.

Pick up Polygonal Lasso Tool (L), press and hold Alt key, little “minus” sign will appear, and select the area that we don’t want selected.

Create new layer above “screen” layer, make sure that foreground color is #ffffff, grab Gradient Tool (G), choose Foreground To Transparent, and simply make a gradient. Lower the opacity to 22%. Name this layer “reflection”. Clear the selection.

Grab Horizontal Type Tool (T), choose font Myriad Pro, size is 8px, color is #cdcdcd, and type MacBook Pro. Place it in the low middle part above “screen” layer.

STEP 3: Creating iSight camera

Let’s move on. Make circle and fill it with #393838. Name this layer “big circle”.

Apply to this layer next layer style.

Duplicate “big circle” layer and apply following layer style.

Again, create another small circle, fill it with #000000, and place it the middle of “big circle copy”. Name this layer “lens”.

Make a new layer over “lens” layer and name it “lens spots”. Using the Brush Tool (B) with small soft round brushes make two little spots, different sizes, to make this iSight camera look real. Use two different colors for this: #47307a and #1a3327.

And iSight camera is finished.

STEP 4: Time To See The Result!

Unhide “bottom” group.
Voila! Here’s our New MacBook Pro.

BONUS STEP: Make MacBook Pro More Realistic

Pick up any wallpaper you want, or grab your own, place it between “screen” and “reflection” layers, resize it to fit just right into the screen!
